Agreed. There are a couple of points that can change the dynamics, though.
First, overpopulation isn’t really a problem. Consumerism is. If people were to live and work for the benefit of the planet rather than for imagined beings and competing consumptionisms, then more people would be good, but I suspect the numbers would drop without consumption as the political goal.
Second point is that most technology is competing with itself for resources, with multiple research and marketing systems, all acting on the premise of consumerism as the driving force. We don’t have to intentionally preserve any technology. Useful things preserve themselves. That’s evolution in a nutshell.
Humans, if they are to be preserved, must become useful to their future selves and that future’s resources, not the other way around.
