Almost all seemingly difficult questions about human behavior can be answered in three words:
“Lack of tigers”.
Insert any other natural risk that humans have isolated themselves from by building walls and pretending that our actions need not be governed by natural feedback mechanisms.
Greed, desire, etc. are just macro results of the basic chemistry that developed into life. Electric charges attract and accumulate complexity while negative and positive feedback mechanisms regulate the flow. Human beings use their mental modeling ability to put ourselves in imaginary worlds (nothing but positive feedbacks in ‘free’ market capitalism) and ignore the real one at all costs, up to and including fanatical competition over whose imaginary bullshit world is better than the next.
