As Joe Bageant pointed out 2 decades ago, the NYT is "the mouthpiece of Empire". The first thing to realize is that "Empire" in the American age is not people or a corporation: it's all of the System of exploitive systems; the mean Mean. The NYT stirs the chili for the sake of its advertisers who steal time and attention as a rule. Telling the world how to be cooperative, decent and generous to the future of the planet is only for the rich old birdwatchers and crossword pedants, not the front page headline at Starbucks or Dunkin donuts. Empire doesn't care who it throws under a bus, as long as the change falls out of their pockets.
