Before getting too enamored with the idea (I nearly died some few times), we have to understand that memories aren’t stored like on a computer full of images. Bits and pieces are, and the conscious mind puts those together with simulations in order to reconstruct what it wants to have happened (consciously or not). Dreams and sleep allow the brain to organize and trim the unnecessary bits and pieces, and to reinforce others, (including some necessary ones sometimes).
