Coercion. I assume you know why the milk is in the back of a grocery store: to herd people through the displays, which are placed to make it hard to just walk through the store.

It's all in the marketing, and it's ALL marketing. Stressed, confused and anxious people buy more stuff that they don't need. They sign for debts and excessive costs for cars they don't want just to get away from the salesmen. When they eventually realize they don't want that particular car, they go to another car dealer and do it all again.

A society based on marketing is no society at all. It's a bunch of scared pigs in pens....and they vote.
