Empires always send missionaries to teach the natives not to eat the salesmen who inevitably follow. Belief actually has nothing to do with evangelism: it's all marketing and extraction. They would never be able to do it without first lying to themselves, then the children. It's a chicken/egg paradox as to what came first; the sales pitch or the profits of the first Aristocrat-bully that passed the protection money plate around.
