Giving Christians the benefit of the doubt that they don't give others, one could assume that the death process strips us of ego, and we are reborn in Heaven as cooperative servants of His paradise.

What would be the fun in that?

The alternative is to be reborn in our own paradise (none of our relatives or bullying school 'chums').

What needs to go is not our ego, but the competitive dumbassery we are told is "merit". Let's say we learn to 'love' each other. What are humans then going to contribute to the environment once it's filled with the toxic ink of an infinite Valentine's Day? Will we stop competing against Nature?

Civiization(city-based societies) will have to be well lost with ego. The walls we have built with ego are individually and collectively selfish. The System of systems reverted to the mean Mean because we have rarely been able to stop believing there's a tiger hiding in every patch of tall grass or behind every person's door. We love fanatical competition over competing fanaticisms. Everyone's a 'fan'.
