Here's a classic Auntie-nalogy for you:
Back in 1958, Harvey O'Connor wrote "Empire of Oil" that laid out how oil companies owned the legislatures of several states and much of the federal government's planning as well. They had purchased this integrity when oil consumption was only 1 million barrels per day. Along the lines of consuming the remaining oil reserves, at what point did leadership reach their Peak Morality(40 million? 60?), and are progressive humanists just wasting lobby time and money because the leadership wells are all dried up(or contaminated)? We've allowed marketers and perpetual growthers to frack everything and suck the value from every possible crack in common decency. We keep chasing the side effects and burning more resources with each remedy without questioning civilization's uselessness to the future of places we construct it upon. We balk at running out of oil for doing things that mostly didn't need doing in the first place. We're still trying to keep factories running at WWII production rates 80 years later.
