I am a tail-end boomer, my older siblings represent the Boomers you describe, and my kids are of millennial and gen X and Z. When the phrase "service economy" was popular, I said there's no such thing. When we moved to the "information age", I said it's disinformation. Now humanity is in the data mining phase of lying to ourselves about the uselessness of humans for the planet. A few bullies and lucky elites buy advertising to steal time and attention from those who have any of either left. Meanwhile, the trend of consumptionism that started with civilization itself is eating the last bits of resource flesh from the bones of the planet. We're literally all in the same spaceship, and there won't be another one coming along. If we can't start repairing it and cooperating, nobody gets out alive. Someone installed economic engines without throttles. Someone else covered the hydroponics bay with a holodeck, and some idiot put an oil furnace in the mess hall without a chimney. Everyone is squabbling and the rich passengers demand a new casino with free poker chips.
