I find similar distaste in trying to explain how computer security doesn't really work (As my military instructor said, "Two people can only keep a secret if one of them kills the other"). An algorithm is only secure if you write it yourself and never, ever let anyone else see it or use it.
People who think their information online is somehow "secure" are well on their way to bitcoin purchases.
They probably also believe the NSA is a 'small' agency of the government, that the Catholic Church is a religious organization (as opposed to a landed corporation), and that the USA is a free market economy.
