I have a friend who has a unique perspective because of early brain trauma. He can't hold imaginary things in memory very well, so to him, God is equivalent to a pink elephant, Bitcoin and anything else that is not sensible (sensed). We have had many interesting discussions about the intentional, the habitual, the imaginary beings of human language, and the inevitable cynicism this can enable.
My bottom line is always the net future usefulness. His is limited to here and now sense-response with no belief in the models humans construct in their imagination.
We agree that human agreement is based on arbitrary commonalities and language. Belief in any deity is an attempt to build community, but too many believe it's the only way.
