I like the idea that changes will be necessary. Unfortunately, we run into a brick wall between democracy and authority to force changes. This is why I advocate for UBI based on sales tax/VAT. In order for people to choose to live differently, they need to be empowered and informed. Fossil fuels are the core of the carbon problem, but the consumption problem is rooted in "always low prices" that don't inform consumers of the real costs at the decision point.
Radical collapse of the consumer economy will happen. The faster things get scary, the sooner an effective number of people can mobilize for intentional changes to our economic systems. The longer things get dragged out via carbon reduction, the more debt load we will be accumulating in Nature's portfolio. In other words, the Economy of uselessness has to go before it smothers us. The choices we need to make have to be grounded in physical reality and biological needs of future people and their places. Instead of extracting resources for money, the money tool has to be used to apply human labor and creativity as increase of resource bases. The concept of profit and incorporation itself has to be reversed. We can no longer tolerate the corporation as a simple "pile of money to which a group of men swear moral allegiance" -Wendell Berry. The incorporation must become unlimited in its liabilities rather than a 'limited liability company'.
Putting the information at the decision point and enabling people to live separately from those corporations (if they choose) is not new. Only the urgency of intention is new to humans. In the past, there was always another frontier to bully. Expansion buried our failure to self-moderate along with voices of peace and ecological reason. We have nowhere to run, and this is the real test of human intentionality. "Clever will substitute for intelligence for a time; then you die." -Lord Vetinari
Many clever rules are made, and most are subverted by clever lawyers who use democratic principles but disinformed and ignorant voters as justification. The underlying system we have created (anthropocentric civilization based on competing fanatical consumptionism and perpetual growth) is an amalgamation of clever humans outwitting Nature temporarily. It's an evolutionary trap.
