I recommend you read "Coercion" by Douglass Rushkoff. When addressing the issues of news products, it may be a little dated, but the important bit is understanding how little of our individual brain has actual agency, and how important cooperation is to overcome the tools and commercial weapons arrayed against us at every turn. Without community, every path looks futile or hopeless as individuals: and marketers have individualized us to death for this reason. Stressed and frustrated people buy more stuff.
