I submit that you have captured the name in your question already. Emergence Engineering is the key to understanding both the development process of technology-based developments as much as understanding human consciousness. Many of the applications, when allowed to manifest as needed for use, rather than as subjects of horrifically inaccurate comparisons to people, will end up being rather simpler than the egocentric system of just letting people drive cars into each other. We need to understand the nature of human nature (studying cows will help) and allowing that the human brain is complex and complicated, but the underlying phenomenon of consciousness may not be so, if we let it happen. Too much of the debate about ethical behavior turns into magical thinking rather than observation. Too much thinking about AI assumes a need for intentionality in machines that only exists for humans in our fantasies.
