I think the bottom line is that religionists tend to lie to children. If you lie to children, then you deserve criticism (and punishment). If you can't establish morality and community without lying to children about imaginary beings, then you have no morality or community (see "advertising").
When your system of economics is based on neotonizing the populace, then using that neotony to take advantage of 'consumers', then there isn't really much philosophy can do to 'fix stupid' of this magnitude.
