I think the core problem is the tax code: cheap food policies and farm subsidies through the complex tax schemes manipulated to get votes. People buy meat because it's easier than catching it themselves, and they don't have time to grow vegetables after working 2 jobs at "always low prices". We enable corporations to be in charge because the religion of Convenience is the paradigm of tax-deductible marketing.
We're not allowed to put the real costs of consumerism at the purchase point because it would be the end of Capitalism as we know it (rich job creators and providers exploiting ignorant customers and labor).
