I think the word that encompasses both and any con is "marketing". We have been conned to accept the theft of our time and attention as benign 'advertising' of products that we can 'freely' choose. The reality is the other side of the 'choice' "carrot-stick" duality: Coercion.

sidebar: Freedom to make choices only exists when we are in groups that cooperate against the constant random threats of Nature. An individual is not 'free' because every moment is filled with vulnerability to their environment. When we form groups, we can specialize or at least share response abilities in order to allow time to sleep, think and re-create our state of mind.

The present state of all marketing forms forces individuals to camouflage themselves against all of the cons (legal and illegal, friends and enemies, bosses and salesmen).

It's all in the marketing, and it's ALL marketing.

God is the marketing department for the town meeting. Unfettered capitalism is the pie-in-the-sky Invisible Hand Job that says, "Do whatever you want, as long as you compete like your life depends on it" (it does).

We have many religions now under various guises, but they all have the same pyramid with an aristocrat at the top and middle managers all standing on the throats of the villagers and the contaminated soil.

It isn't hard to find a path to understanding and accepting each other if we simply realize that our future depends on that soil and the people closest to it.

If humans are so smart, why do they look up for answers? What have they done for their own places lately?

Evil: an action taken based on an unquestioned belief system.

You can question everything that any philosopher, prophet or priest has ever said, but you will always find their most common question has always been, "What's for dinner?"
