I think there's another story that should be linked or written from this one: the dopamine production areas of the body, and the sensitivity to injuries (re: the Concussion epidemic).

We have built infrastructure to support automobiles and sports as the dominant species, but when the system makes our children confused and unmotivated, how will they ever find out?

The Dopamine story is humanity's story right now. Sex, drugs, head injuries, attention theft and cheap food are no way to run civilizations, but they sure are profitable.
