I think this is an emergent phenomenon of our instinct to form a pack or tribe. Individualism is suicide in the jungle. We all have to sleep sometime.
Leadership that always seeks the new (Asperger's/hunters) vies for dominance with security of familiar places and people. Each has its advanatages and disadvantages, so tribes survive based on useful leadership. Sometimes it's more useful to be a bully than wise, and with the aggressive nature of intelligence to solve problems (and capture stuff), the bullies have almost always gained the most growth for any tribe.
