I view advertising as theft of my time. If they don’t first provide service (personally useful information about a useful product), then forcing me to read ads by popping them up or sending emails or snailmail is theft of my time and resources. We’ve all seen enough science about how our lizard brains influence our responses to now know that professional marketers are thieves, nearly rapists; taking advantage of weaknesses we cannot change under circumstances out of our control. It isn’t a free market when you don’t have equal power to say “no”. Billions of dollars are spent on getting people to buy stuff. Very little is spent on telling us not to.
