I'm not sure I'm clear on what you are saying is the #1 problem. The division? As a melting pot democracy, division is normal. I think the #1 thing dividing us is actually what's missing: some kind of common identity as humans. To this point, the last 3 or 4 generations have been conditioned to be fanatical competitors over competing fanaticisms ("fans"/consumers) instead of members of common communities with cooperative functionality. I (an atheist) think the decline of church membership and attendance is a symptom of the same problem: people are now going to church to consume the product, not to cooperate with estranged neighbors they historically couldn't avoid sharing workspaces with.
America needs global warming and disasters to build (rebuild) peaceful civilization, because we're certainly not going to get it from the profitable antagonists of the networks or educational systems (the highest paid public employee in almost every state is a sportsball coach :aka beer salesman).
