I'm surprised people have any room for tattoos after all the branding is done. I suppose that's the purpose of teens getting tattoos: get your own brand on display before the marketers take over.
It's all in the marketing, and it's ALL marketing. God is the marketing department for the town meeting, representing an imagined Ultimate Aristocrat as well as an expensive product (A tithe and your children's souls) that never has to be delivered.
Competition paints everyone as a target. Resentment and profits pull the trigger.
