In the USA, there's a proposal that doesn't get much discussion. It started way back in the Gingrich years. The FairTax plan. Promoted to eliminate complexity (and the time burden) of the income tax code, it could have easily been negotiated to be UBI based on sales tax. It would eliminate most corruption by eliminating the mechanism for most lobbyists.

It still exists, but is ignored. I think it got ignored because of one reason. The opposite of capitalism in a market society is not socialism; it's sales taxes. All decisions in a capitalist society (manufacturing, wars, etc) are determined by the choices at checkouts. One dollar is the vote that is counted. As long as prices are kept low, people will 'vote' for destruction. Raising costs at the checkout will cause customers to panic and run away from consumerism. They can then only turn to each other.

The question, "How will we pay for everything?" implies we need most of what we pay(or get paid) for now.

Most economic activity benefits cars, corporations and private islands, not people or their places.
