Investment can help, if it’s in local economics and cooperatives. We have to start thinking now about what building an economy from nothing will require in order to minimize loss of life. I say “from nothing” because, like Seinfeld, our economy was a show about nothing. It was about taking resources from the world’s lowest levels (including people’s lives) and wasting them for no particular goal (The Invisible Hand Job, supported by religious fanaticism).
It will require teaching people to handle and grow food: to care for their neighbors and to do manual labor that adds value to their places. It will require shared risks and skills (up to and including medicine and civil services).
It will require not being consumers anymore.
Is America ready for it? Hell no, but when is anyone ready to lose their illusions, eh?
