Missing in most discussions is our ability to contribute to the resources we will need to procure basic needs. This desire manifests as hoarding. It’s apparent in other species as well (burying nuts or carcasses). Being content with our immediate needs has instinctive connection to knowing where our next meal is coming from. Accumulation of money is a civilized substitution for the accumulation of useful resources and skills.

Play fighting is skill-building for the next need. Satisfying our instinct to play is the core of the recreation and sports entertainment industries.

The uselessness of watching sports and war movies pushes people to fanatical hoarding and social combativeness as they try to fill the holes of uselessness in their distorted world model.
