Modern AI research is showing that intelligence and awareness are emergent phenomena from increasing complexity of neural networks. Humans are animals that had a bunch of extra space in their head (counterweight for running) that was filled with fat and neurons. Over time, that complex self-organizing network developed the ability to make a model of its environment and then move a model of itself inside that environment.

The modern "spiritual" human being is such a model, symbiotically riding along on the biological human animal.

Civilization (city-based society) isolated modern humans from the risks and responsibilities of our physical natural environment.

The rest is all marketing and statutory constructs that fit the desires of our competitive ego models without regard to the future needs of the physical environment (until people stop buying stuff because they are dying).

The question isn't whether we are "spiritual" or "animal", but whether we are actually intentional individuals or just manipulated consumers who believe anything that we are stimulated, habitualized and saturated with.

AI machines that are trained by allowing them to access the internet turn into racist bullies and exhibitionists promoting false concepts.

Human "spirituality" means we believe in it as a methodology (The Invisible Hand).
