My 92 year old father put it succinctly several years ago after his lifetime of farm innovation: "Every new technology always costs just a little more than you can afford."

It's not just the tech companies. It's the banks, the universities and the government: always pushing competitive expansionism under the premise of "efficiency" and "feeding the world", but always to make everything just a little more complicated and more expensive than the land can afford.
