My most recent take on this theme is that Present People are infinitely outnumbered by Future People, but Future People don't get to vote or choose what Present People do to them. Present People who are bullies would just as soon reduce the number of Future People so they don't have to face up to them either in reality or some kind of Afterlife. This is where the belief in an imaginary afterlife can backfire.
