Other tech, like HVDC (high voltage DC) and superconducting transformers, is also improving efficiency. The room temperature goal is probably like hot fusion: always 30 years away and propping up entire research wings of buildings with rich people’s names on them.
Meanwhile, battery research and solar efficiencies are making local generation more common every day, starting to infringe on the utilitys’ megalopoly enough to scare them if you start talking about off-grid solar. They make money on the inefficiencies, just as insurance companies do.
They’ll always have Cities and big users as customers, but single family homes are going to be independent eventually.
