The battery seems to be the biggest issue of contention. Lithium ion batteries as we know them, and batteries in general, are a temporary technology. Some kind of alternate storage is needed, but most cars only really need half of what they are pushing on consumers, and suburbs are the bigger cause of the transportation waste.
Humans are very good at solving the unnecessary problem.
