The conundrum is in the timing. We (consumerism adoptees) have lived too many generations without responsibility for the real costs of necessary goods, and the 'savings' have been used to build a world based on unnecessary goods and services. Trying to inject real costs back at the visible point of purchase is a death knell for Perpetual Growth Manifest Destiny. It's just un-American. The tariffs Trump is trying to impose are protections for the American system of ignorant pleasure seeking; not to be confused with the originally intended '(informed and naturally limited ) "pursuit of happiness." We are not going to intentionally "kill The Economy before it kills everyone", but the ignorance that built it might just come around and lap itself on the Tariffs track just before it runs into Nature's brick wall.
