The fanatical competiveness of competing fanaticisms wants you to ignore the difference between punching down and talking down. Market forces keep using antagonism to make money with false equivalence, but the people being punched and shot and imprisoned for poverty lifestyles know that talking down doesn't work. That's why they don't trust the people who think they can fight the punching with big words (intellectual bullies) and so, end up voting for yet another (regular guy) physical bully (if they still have the right to vote).
