The one that stuck in my head since I was a young sailor visiting Sri Lanka is this one, “When a wise man and a fool travel along the same road, the wise man learns more from the fool than the fool will learn from the wise man.”

It resides deep in my brain next to another I learned soon after from Douglas Adams, “Any engineer who believes he can make something completely foolproof has never met a complete fool.”
