The story of James Garfield's nomination and election is really the nail in Grant's story. The corruption of the old civil service job lottery was holding back the country. Garfield (Grant's friend and fellow Civil War hero) was supposed to speak in favor of Grant's nomination at the convention, but the lack of a clear purpose, and Garfield's commanding presence eventually led to someone nominating him instead.
