The tax code doesn't help. The complexities of the income tax code provide opportunities for accountants in companies to have more power than is prudent, forcing decisions about product quality and repairability to be overshadowed by pure number crunching and advertising (which we subsidize through their deductions). In other words, we pay them to brainwash us into buying shoddy products and turning our brains to mush so we don't know what we are paying for (Always Low Prices). The real costs of gadgets and gizmos are externalized and buried in our collective government debt and trade deficits, as well as the exploitation of labor.
But you can't argue with Money when Money owns everything.
