This. Civilization (city-based society) isolates humans from the risks and response abilities of the environment that spawned us.

The simple response is to replace the feedback mechanism with a sales tax so we can see at the decision point how much it hurts to have civilization itself. Combine with a UBI (no means testing/resentments) to pay people to stay home and be useful to each other, and maybe we can then come up with an education and leadership methodology that favors thoughtfulness and cooperation instead of bullying and competition.

It's not the carbon: it's the competitive consumptionism.

People need to learn to contribute more useful work than we take away from the environment.

For a mere 4 dollars, we can buy 100 manhours worth of energy and throw it away for the convenience of mowing a lawn or driving to a job to buy a car to drive to a job.
