This is a common refrain from people who don’t have a use for advanced science, but it is wrong. Yes, many students won’t go into sciences, and they may not need to memorize formulas, but many will and do, and in practice, those memorized formulas are critical to synthesis of more advanced formulas. Maybe someday computer intelligence will be able to recursively question itself, but until then, we users have to do it and understand when there’s something wrong with the computer’s algorithms.

Along with the hands-on feel for a thing is the importance of a theoretical feel, and that doesn’t work with a screen picture.

I agree that the democratization should happen, though. It should be part of a basic minimum income system, and students should be paying teachers on a daily or hourly wage, as they arrive at the school or classroom.
