This is also why I have advocated for a sales tax/VAT and UBI for over 25 years..so that everyone sees the actual cost of buying a life at the decision points: the checkouts. Everything our leaders have done (government and corporate) has been justified by the 'votes' counted at the purchase points, and people are kept competing against each other under the premise that too many have no value at all.
