Two things: the meantime infrastructure has a use for now: moderation. Environmentally friendly sources are on the rise, and each kilowatt produced is a bit less fossil fuel used that day. It is adding up because fossil energy prices are actually still cheap overall (corrected for inflation).
The last, and definitely not least, we are approaching if not passed a point of peak human labor value. When looking at humanity as a negative contributor to the future of Earth's resources for future life, we need to seriously ask what leadership and cultures will be best for local and global long term sustainability. While science fiction does a good deed showing the benefits of cooperative people in infinite goal seeking, it does a disservice by glossing over the boom and bust cycles of competitive growth on a finite planet. Free energy is a bug, not a feature. It enables waste and oblivious use of other resources, unfettered pollution (see toxic sewage sludge), and if not overpopulation per se, it encourages a useless population that consumes its places.
