Actually, we need to start thinking in terms of Generosity. "The opposite of consumption is not frugality; it is generosity." -Raj Patel
Our entire concept of human existence is backward (extraction instead of usefulness to our places).
We can start with UBI and good health based on sales tax/VAT. Increase the VAT until consumption is no longer the point of living, and increase the UBI to pay (and educate) people to care for their places and each other. Government and corporate administrations should be servicing those people who contribute to the planet, not those who extract from it.
As a tangent to this story, one of the biggest blocks of opposition to electric cars is the auto parts suppliers. For every hardware store in a town, there are 5 or 6 auto parts stores. Most of those parts are not needed for electric cars.
It's not like Tesla drivers have to Bling up their cars to prove they are more privileged than their peers.
If everyone drove a basic electric car (find a picture of a Commutacar), most auto parts houses could be replaced with windshield wiper vending machines at the tire stores, and half the tire stores would be unnecessary because electric cars could all have the same size and type of tire (OMG! Standards?)
People don't hate electric cars because they're electric: they hate electric cars because we live in an economy based on Stupid.
Tesla had to come up with a car so full of crap (self-driving, super speed, etc) that it could compete with the Cowboy Cadillac market (crew cab trucks with no useful cargo area).
All most people need is an enclosed golf cart, and if we actually had leadership, they wouldn't need that because corporations would be required to provide transport.
