Vertical siding is perfectly fine in Canada (or Da Upper Peninsula...same thing, eh?): if it's on a barn, or a cabin in da woods. The problem with vertical siding in towns and cities is that it's on houses, and those houses are too plentifully filled with people and crap (urinals, too) that nobody needs, and definitely doesn't need protection with vertical siding.

The ugliness of vertical siding is in how it distracts from the core ugliness of civilization that created the belief that horizontal straight lines are 'normal'.

We never needed siding in the caves or the trees. Some would say we never should have left the ocean... 🐟 🤔
