We get the wolves we feed. Consumerism is a mindset and habit that was cultivated to dispose of post WWII overproduced goods. Trump is the direct emergence of humanity’s desire to buy a life instead of living one. The opposite of unfettered consumptionism is not socialism: it’s sales tax. Ironically, the concept of progressive sales tax is mostly a Republican one. Democrats could embrace it and negotiate the rate and prebate to finance UBI and healthcare (not insurance), but everyone is too stubborn and sugar-addled to think anymore.
