We just can't get the concept in our heads that the point of life is opportunistic: to be useful to its own future. For other species, that means being a contributor more than a consumer of resources. Feedback mechanisms (other opportunistic species) keep things in check, but not because of intentional goals of "balance".

Humans are the first (that we know of, agreed) species that has the conscious choice of whether or not to go extinct.

We have the opportunity to be more useful to our environment than consumers of it (the opposite of consumption is not frugality; it is generosity).

Instead, we allow the bullies and opportunists of civilization (city-based society isolated from environmental risks and responsibilities) to condition us to work for them and buy their stuff.

The opposite of unfettered consumptionist capitalism is not socialism (unfettered consumptionist Humanism): it is sales tax.

Human economies don't need to be 'fixed' per se: they need to be put in Reverse (humans contributing to the planet rather than sucking the life out of it).

We have to stop throwing our resources and creativity at imaginary beings in the sky and Ivory Towers. Ask any dirt farmer where most of the resources have to go.
