We often hear (in environmental discourse), " What is the carrying capacity of Earth?" We never turn around and ask what people should be carrying for their places. This is the fundamental problem of consumptionism: a System of systems supporting humanity's psychopathic, blind competitive war against Nature, and our best response has been "How can we extend the limited time Earth will stand up to it?" (The usual response is, "How can I profit from scarcity economics?" ) When we see each other as competitive consumers instead of cooperative Contributors, no version of legal maneuvering will be sensibly sustainable in the real biological world that civilization ignores at its peril. People are moving to other places because they have become useless to their own place, ending up seeking jobs elsewhere supporting wealthier versions of the extractionist paradigm.
