Well, this isn't going to help your worried state of mind, but let's throw it out there.

There is no line.

The line is drawn after the fact, for one thing. People with money, religion or authority have the option of erasing the line (war, terrorism, colonialism).

Police collect data about the line, so they get to decide how blurry it is, especially if it's a blue one.

People do shit. They have reasons for doing shit; in that order.

The 'free will' of any individual human is tied to their ties in a network of other humans (however limited or horrible). There is no such thing as an 'individual' who is a human with true agency. We have created the mythical ethos of selfish interest as 'freedom' and 'pursuit of happiness', but it's actually insanity. We are pack animals first; domesticated pack animals exploited by our own systems for maximum profit. Some can handle it better than others and some go all-in to get to the top of the pyramid. Most end up somewhere on one side or the other of the mean Mean. Some just drop off the screen until they turn rabid from neglect or from hanging out with rabid wolves (ahem, Maine). What percentile of the curve are any of us on, really? Isn't it time that our 'market' society should have a murder tax on every purchase?
