Wow. Some vitriol here. I don’t disagree with your premise here, Douglas, just that it is missing one more step to be a possible useful idea. That is, that when everything is questioned as a policy, we start to get what should be a scientific attitude. Let everyone throw their hats in the ring, their myths on the table, and their questioning minds. Skepticism is much better than Blind Beliefs in ancient weapons and hokey religions. Let the inquiring minds sift through all of the crap and the things that are real are those that are still standing when everyone stops believing in them. The nutjobs will believe even harder in their foggy icons, but with a little effort and some luck, the sieve of reasoned and intelligent thought will capture some truths that wouldn’t be found without shaking everything up. Let the Spectacle arise, but don’t believe in it as a methodology.
