Yeah, this is why I wrote about Competition as the one thing you are never allowed to question. It's the core of everything wrong with civilization itself. The human species survived as tribes because individual competition among equally devious and mean predators just doesn't get anywhere. Along comes civilization to create enclaves of competition (religions, nations, citystates, brands, gangs, corporations, etc) with the lovely addition of "limited liability corporations" to set upon the vulnerable children.

A recent discussion thread about civilization went the opposite way, with someone telling me that the root of the word civilization is 'civil', but it's really "civitas" or "city-based". Cities are inherently predatory and extractive, with no inherent responsibility to the natural environment. Even liberals defend them to the death because they think "'more people' must always be more important and 'saving' more people must be a higher morality"

Corporations are a subset of cities in that sense: with not only no liability to nature, but no liability to the city or society, either (other than the mythical Invisible Hand Job of Magic Market strippers).

"Rugged Individualism" is a marketing shtick for bullies and profiteers. America has a jones for those who walk off into the wilderness and conquer everything they see, but not for the groups that care for places as part of it.

Rugged Individualism is the micro version of Aristocracy: even a single servant is enough to maintain the illusion of elevation, even if it's just a cat or a dog or a comically overpowered vehicle.
