Yes, Consumerism started after WWII in order to keep "jobs, jobs, jobs!" going (the alternative was to just produce stuff and dump it in the ocean). I tweak to the term "Consumptionism" most of the time now, because that started with civilization (city-based species) aka "colonialism". The difference being whether you look at it as a sales pitch or species-wide avoidance of its environment's needs.
