Yes. We see a lot of blame placed on video games and modern attention-stealing systems of marketing, but only because they are overtly profiting and attacking our time and money. Before this century started, most education was still happening through advertising and catalogs, not in schools. The biggest difference always comes down to the flow of money. Advertisers get to deduct their ‘education’ costs from their taxes. Everyone else has to pay with taxes. Borrowing money to build a house and fill it with commercialized products is tax-deductible. Learning to make things yourself and earn money is taxable (or at best, non tax-deductible). Everything about our system of politics is oriented to keep people acting as dependents of profiteers who write the laws and pay for elections while keeping the real costs hidden and making labor pay for its own exploitation. Corporations get immortality. People get cradle-to-grave exploitation.
