You might want to go farther back with Nixon. Read "The Devil's Chessboard". Polarization was accelerated in 1968, but the dirty tricks started in the 1940s, and establishment of the consumerism industrial complex with Republican donors buting up both parties came from the power of oil money and advertising science. There's a lot less humanistic intent than most people realize.
